Disappointing host

The condo itself was well maintained and decorated. It had wonderful amenities in the kitchen and bathrooms as well as beach gear. The host, however; was very disappointing. When we arrived and realized there was no AC in the living room we let the host know it was very hot and asked if there was a portable unit we were perhaps missing since three of our children were sleeping on the sofa beds and it was in the 80s during our stay. Rather than a simple response the host condescended by stating most people spend their days out of the condo exploring Maui and that it wasn’t a problem. After reading the entire description more thoroughly I realized it was in the listing and I should have looked closer. The other two units we rented in the same complex both had AC in the living room so we spent most of our time in those units to escape the heat. A couple days into our trip the pool closed for maintenance for 4 days making in unusable the rest of our trip. This wasn’t advertised in the listing and the pool at this resort was the only reason we chose the unit over others we were considering. When I politely notified the host of this they offered up the code for two of her other units on island to use their pool. I told her this was extremely kind of them but that we didn’t have an interest in driving to another pool and that the convenience of having a pool at our condo was why we booked. We rented two other units in the complex from different hosts and they offered us a $200 discount for the inconvenience and a sincere apology. Excellent customer service and the same way we treat guests at homes we own and rent out. On the day before our checkout I received an email from the host asking for a review but with the condition that I only leave a 5 star review and if I felt it was less than 5 stars to not leave a review. Furthermore the email stated that 5 star reviews are very important to the host so they can continue to get renters and that they would in turn rate me as a guest as 5 stars if I gave them a 5 star. The reason I chose this specific unit as one of the 3 we booked in the complex was because of the excellent reviews. Now I know why. The host is bribing people for 5 star reviews. I still took the high road and decided not to leave a review at all and give my honest feedback privately to the host to give them an opportunity to improve the experience for future guests. I own vacation rentals myself and I value honest feedback from guests. I politely complimented the things we enjoyed and then notified them that the other units we rented in the complex had AC throughout the and recommended they consider such an addition for the comfort of their guests. I also let the host know that the master bed was uncomfortable enough that my husband and I ended up sleeping on the more comfortable sofa beds in the living room despite the heat just to get some sleep. Rather than a thank you for the feedback and calling it a day she made excuses and told us other guests love the bed so much they ask for the brand so they can buy it at home. If that’s true I’d be surprised but it’s not the point. When a guest gives feedback you take it into consideration, thank them for their stay and use the information to make informed decisions over time as to how you’d like to adjust your rental to suit the majority. You don’t shame them for their feedback. After all this I was happy to just let it be and move on with my life and never rent from the host again. Two days after we checked out I received a call from the host directly. They told me the cleaners had arrived and a vase was missing. I apologized for having moved the vase from the entryway shelf to another safe location in the condo and forgot to put it back. I did this because I didn’t want the vase to be knocked over while we were moving our things in and out as it was right by the front door. I carefully moved it to a safe place to prevent this. I offered to return to the unit to help the cleaners look since I couldn’t recall the exact place I’d put it. The host said they would ask their cleaner to look for it and we hung up. The host called me back shortly thereafter and told me the cleaners couldn’t find it and asked me to go to the unit before they left in one hour. I told the host we were just being seated ant a restaurant nearby and that it would likely be slightly over an hour. The host said to me, you said you were close by can’t you just leave the restaurant and come look? At this point I was so dumbfounded by the audacity of this host that I asked how much the vase was to replace as I was just over dealing with them. The host told me they don’t know and they will have to look it up so I just gave up and left the restaurant with my family to go look for it. Of course, before I even arrived the cleaner had found it and was on the phone with the host. The cleaner told the host over the phone that the vase had a crack in it. Any damage done to the vase was before we arrived as I had intentionally put it aside to keep it safe. I took a photo of the vase to ensure that if the host tries to charge me for it I can at least protect myself from an exorbitant charge as it was a made in china vase and I could easily see the host trying to claim it was more expensive than it was. I have never had an experience like this before in the dozens of vacation rentals we have stayed at over the years. We are always gracious guests and hosts in our own units and this was such a shock. The last thing that I’ll say for any parents looking at this unit is that the TV in the living room is extremely dangerously perched atop a thin table that’s thinner than the tv stand itself, furthermore it’s not secured in any way to the table or the wall and represents a dangerous fall risk for anyone with small children. Mine are older so I wasn’t concerned but I was very surprised by the choice in a unit that welcomes families.

Peace and quiet in paradise

The apartments are wonderful. Very clean and comfortable. There is everything you need including a barbecue grill. The living room with two sofas and a view of the garden was unforgettable. But the most important thing for us is the beach. Incredible sunsets. Snorkeling with turtles every day. We saw Whales jumping out of the water wow wow wow. There is no doubt that the Dowell family apartments are the right choice.
